Interview with Maggie Blackbird

Author of the When We Were Young series

Tell us a little about yourself

I'm Maggie Blackbird, an Ojibway from Northwestern Ontario who writes romance starring Canada's Indigenous People. I was born and raised on the rez where my family still lives. Now I reside in the country with my husband and our fur babies (two gorgeous Alaskan Malamutes).

When I'm not writing, I like to golf, fish, boat, garden, walk, and be anywhere outdoors.

I don't go near writing (or anything writing related) come the evening. That's when I like to curl up and watch my fave TV shows. I'm a die-hard murder mystery fan. I love Grantchester, Murdoch Mysteries, Frankie Drake Mysteries, Poirot, Columbo, Barnaby Jones.

What do I have to do before I go to sleep? Read, of course.

What prompted you to write your upcoming or latest release?

Knight Moves is the third book in the When We Were Young series, so I had to write it LOL. As for the plot, it was only natural Billy and René would become separated. You can only keep secrets for so long before you're caught, and naturally, they are caught.

What genre and tropes are in your upcoming or latest release? Why these?

Young adult, contemporary, LGBT romance. As for these genres, I chose young adult and LGBT because that's what Billy and René are. Characters always tell me who and what they are. So I was ordered to write a series based during the mid-nineties set at an Ojibway community in Northwestern Ontario.

If your main character had a day off, how would they spend it?

Billy would most likely go up the mountain. He loves being there, relaxing and sketching. AS for René, he'd most likely end up in the rehearsal room drumming.

Anything else you'd like to share with our readers?

I hope you enjoy the third book in the series. It was a pleasure to write. And thank you very much for having me on Two Nerds with Words.

After receiving his grade twelve diploma and marking his eighteenth birthday, René Oshawee cannot fight the temptation seventeen-year-old high school junior Billy Redsky blatantly offers now that what they share has become taboo.

When their secret romance is blown into the open, Billy’s foster parents send René to Toronto to complete the last of his schooling under the supervision of a family friend, leaving Billy behind at their Ojibway community.

Now Billy and René must make the biggest decision of their lives—fight for the true love they know they’ll never find with anyone else or go their separate ways.
