Our Next Obsession?
What subgenre will be our next obsession?
It all started with Twilight. It always does though, doesn’t it? We were all crazy for good vampire in our books. We inhaled them like our lives depended on it.
But it didn’t stop with vampires. Next was NA (new adult)—a genre that was actually created for the college-aged readers and readers who had grown up in a generation that embraced its inner nerd and needed more adult content but fit for their age range.
This was followed by motorcycle romances reads, then BDSM, and BBW, and MM. This very sexy tour through the contemporary lasted a few years till it detoured into high school bully romance in the YA department—though, the content tends to be super explicit for that age group—before we circled back to paranormal. The last year or two have brought us the best of paranormal academy reads, paranormal prison reads, and the best yet, anything reverse harem (paranormal or not, always hot.)
So that leaves us with my original query:
What subgenre will be our next obsession?
I guess time will tell. What do you think? Do you have a prediction of what the next subgenre or trope will be the next big thing?
